Printed Text: UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. Philadelphia, Pa. The University was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin as an academy, and in 1791, under the Revolution, a new charter was given by the State and the present title was adopted. In 1872 the university was moved to the present extensive grounds east of the Schuylkill River. Since that time many buildings have been erected and are constantly increased.
